Its important ad in regards to YOUR ART and YOUR OWNERSHIP over it
So idk how many of you actually read the terms and services agreement when resigning up for deviantART but I sure as hell didnt and had to learn via tumblr about this clusterfuck of a situation.
Im not mentioning names or specifics because, to be frank, I cant remember everything that went down exactly but I have the important stuff down. So what happened was somebody made a REALLY cool totoro crossover with some other fandom art and it was really good. Like it was really cute. The artist uploaded it to their deviantART account as per usual and didnt watermark the physical artwork. They didnt usually, i dont think, because (as far as I know) they never had an art theft problem in the past. Hot Topic came along and, without asking the artist or buying it or anything, used their artwork without their knowledge or consent on one of their shirts. The artist was probably like wtf, stealing bastards, and messaged Hot Topic and also deviantART i think alerting them of the stealing and that they should be paid. After nothing came of it they took to tumblr and told everyone about what happened, where ANOTHER tumblr user came along to shed some light. DeviantARTs terms of service basically says that once you post your art to deviantART they own it and they can give it out to other parties at their discretion without notifying or compensating the original artist.
I dont want somebody else to be taken advantage of because of deviantsARTs devilish details so I figured Id make a journal about it. Hopefully you guys will read it and take it to heart. I'll try to see if I can find the original post ad put it up here but I honestly doubt I'll be able to find it.
